New Captain America
Marvel has revealed pictures of the new Captain America, with a costume designed by Alex Ross.No word yet on who it'll be, but Marvel has said it will not be Steve Rogers in the costume.
I kind of dig the costume, but don't see why it was needed. Much like Ben Riley's Spider-Man costume it's a decent moderinizing without dishonoring the original, but was it needed? No.

If it's Bucky in the costume, then I can understand the gun.
I also think that Stark will probably help design the suit. That said, I am glad the costume looks the way it does and that we're not getting something like the Iron Spidey costume.
my only reservation with this costume is from a purely practical standpoint:
if that head/chest-piece is made of some kind of metallic armor... it comes to a POINTED TIP right over top of the stomach area... so wouldn't he be risking self-injury any time he crouches forward? that thing looks like it would be sharp enough to put a hole in his belly-button...
Addressing the question actually posed, I think the costume will be needed from a character standpoint. I mean, of the likely people to become the next Cap, who would not have reservations of stepping into his exact same costume? How many would at least feel like that's way too much pressure, if not outright feeling like they're replacing him by wearing it? I don't think any of them would feel comfortable with this, and so it makes sense that they would choose to wear a new costume honoring Cap, but showing some reserve/humility (and perhaps even some individuality?) in not going for the exact same thing and risk making it look like nothing happened.
I love this new design, it make him looks ruder that with the old costume. I'm sure this new design will be a complete successful.
